nglewoods Morningside High School was awarded the first place prize among the 12 teams who competed at the Stepping in the Right Direction High School Step Show on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Pasadena City College.
The event hosts were The Ivy League Club at John Muir High School, the Black Student Association of Pasadena City College, and Stepping in the Right Direction HBCU Tours.
Over 1100 spectators braved the elements on the rainy Saturday afternoon to cheer for their favorite team. Shanika Russell, advisor of Morningside High Schools Drill Team attributes their win to hard work, dedication, respect and sisterhood. Palmdale High School placed second and Animo Inglewood Charter High School placed third. The teams were judged on their use of the event theme, precision, synchronization, creativity, originality, and audience appeal.
Prior to the show, representatives of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) participated in a college faire. Many of the campuses that will be visited during Stepping in the Right Directions upcoming Black College Tour scheduled for April 6-13, 2008 were on hand including Dillard University, Tuskegee Institute, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.
