LAUSD issues statement regarding potential layoffs

The following statement was released Tuesday evening by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) regarding potential layoffs of employees:
LAUSD faces unprecedented challenges in balancing its budget amidst the current economic crisis in our state and in our country. To survive and avoid bankruptcy, we may be forced to lay off thousands of teachers and other employees. We hope to do these unavoidable reductions in force with as little disruption as possible to our classrooms, schools, programs and offices. We will provide as much notice as we can, or is required, through contracts with our bargaining units.
We are also anticipating reassignments of non-school-based employees back to school sites. Some will return to classrooms. Some will return to administrator positions. Because of contractual rights and agreements, others will unfortunately lose their jobs.
The layoffs are just part of a series of recommendations available to the Los Angeles School Board to keep the District out of bankruptcy.
LAUSD will continue to act in the best interest of all the children of our District.
