As school districts continue to juggle finances, summer school is once again a casualty. A survey of local agencies finds that in the Los Angeles Unified only students who have failed classes and need to recover credits are eligible to attend summer school, and that most of the classes offered will be available online.
Inglewood will only offer summer classes from June 25 to July 26 at a limited number of its schools–Inglewood and Morningside high schools; Crozier will accommodate middle school students and Bennett Kew Elementary will handle special education students. Compton Unified will also offer only limited summer school classes for students who need to recover credits and for special education pupils. For details, call (310) 639-4321.
El Camino College Compton Center will hold concurrent six-week and eight-week summer sessions and students are limited to taking seven units. Both sessions begin June 18.
Only four campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District will hold summer session.
Locally those schools are Los Angeles City College, which will only offer nursing classes; and Los Angeles Trade Tech, which will offer a limited number of classes in most subject areas and plans its summer session for June 18-Aug. 16.
East Los Angeles College plans to offer an almost full slate of courses.
In Antelope Valley, the high school district will offer summer classes at all schools from July 2-27. Antelope Valley College is planning summer school from June 11 to Aug. 3. Only a limited number of courses will be offered. At the Lancaster campus most of the offerings are physical education. The Palmdale site will have a much more extensive selection, including academics such as math, English, geology and philosophy. For additional information, call (661) 722-6300.
