The city of Carson on Saturday will host its 2015 Juneteenth Rhythm & Blues Celebration. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Miles Park, 1340 E. Diamondale Drive.

Described by organizers as a “family fun event,” the afternoon will include a number of musical and dance acts including the Loose Ends R&B Band, the Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles, Ian Band featuring vocalist “Brit J,” the Dembrebrah West African Drum and Dance Ensemble, Sophisticated Dance Inc., and vocalist Madame Dee.

There will be food and vendor booths as well as a children’s play area.

“Juneteenth” is the traditional festival held annually on the nineteenth of June (especially in southern states) to commemorate the date in 1865 when slaves in Texas found out they were free, and more generally, the emancipation of slaves throughout the Confederate South. Celebrated on June 19, the term is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” and is recognized as a special day of observance in most states. This year marks the 150th year of “Juneteenth.” The federal Emancipation Proclamation was issued on Jan. 1, 1863.
