The Sickle Cell Disease Foundation celebrated the one-year anniversary of a new adult clinic located at Martin King Jr. Outpatient Center, 1670 E. 120th St., in Watts. The clinic is one of only a handful of such facilities or programs across the country and was opened in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) awareness month.

There are similar clinics in Fresno, Augusta, Ga., Pittsburgh, Pa., New Haven, Conn., Cleveland, Ohio; Little Rock, Ark., Milwaukee, Wis., Durham, N.C., Atlanta, Ga., and in Baltimore, Md.

The clinics are a new development in the fight against because in the early years of the battle those stricken with the disease did not live much past 25 years of age.

There a number of activities taking place locally in recognition of Sickle Cell Awareness Month, including a celebrity bowling challenge and fundraiser on Sept. 30 at Pinz Entertainment Center, 12655 Ventura Blvd., in Studio City. The cost is $75 to attend ($150 to bowl) with proceeds directed to fund programs offered by the KIS Foundation of which care packages will be given to hospital bound persons.

Sickle Cell disease is an inherited blood disorder usually diagnosed at birth. The disease is typically found in persons of African descent. Most persons with the disease begin to show symptoms by 4 months of age or shortly thereafter.
