Hip hop has had its icons, but probably few have yielded more power in
recent years than Chance the Rapper. He has stood up for better education,
especially in his native state of Illinois, and is often not afraid to call
it like he sees it. Today it was revealed that the Heineken beer brand has
pulled an ad after the rapper called it “terribly racist.” According to the
Huffington Post, the ad shows a bartender sliding a bottle of the beer past
several Black people to a fair skinned woman while the words “Sometimes,
lighter is better” are flashed on the screen. “While we feel the ad is
referencing our Heineken Light beer, we missed the mark, are taking the
feedback to heart and will use this to influence future campaigns,” a
Heineken spokesperson told Newsweek, touting the company’s history of diverse
marketing http://www.newsweek.com/chance-rapper-heineken-ad-860345. The
ad has been pulled from television

and
YouTube, reports NBC News. Chance the Rapper on Sunday called attention to
the ad. “I think some companies are purposely putting out noticeably racist
ads so they can get more views,” Chance tweeted. The rapper added that he
wasn’t calling for a boycott but was pointing out how often it happens.
