History was made Thursday Sept. 27 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, as the first-ever elected African-American judge in county history was sworn in to office, reports CBS News. Ronda Colvin Leary was sworn in during the ceremony. She is the first African-American candidate to be elected to a countywide Gwinnett seat, and in achieving that, she is also the first African-American to be elected to the State Court bench in the Gwinnett Circuit. Gwinnet County is a populous area just outside of Atlanta. It is the second largest county in Georgia in terms of population with about a million people. Leary has spent 17 years as an attorney and says state court is a natural progression. She also says her election proves anything is possible.
