The annual Spirit Awards were held Saturday in Santa Monica, California, with Barry Jenkins winning for Best Director and the film he directed, “If Beale Street Could Talk,” taking home the prize for Best Feature Film. The Spirit Awards are chosen by Film Independent and its 6,200 members. It’s required that the nominations were all made in the U.S. for less than $20 million. The budget for “If Beale Street Could Talk” was reportedly $12 million. As at the Golden Globes, actress Regina King won for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “If Beale Street Could Talk.”
