Councilmember Joe Buscaino (15th District) was elected as the president of the National League of Cities (NLC) late last year. With more than 2,000 member cities, NLC serves as both an advocacy and resource organization, representing 19,000 cities, towns and villages in the US.
Councilmember Buscaino concluded the annual City Summit with the announcement of his 2020 platform: Leading with Urgency, which encompasses three areas: homelessness, federal and local partnerships and driving local economies through innovation.
“I am very proud to lead an organization that is inclusive and represents all Americans,” Buscaino said. “National League of Cities brings us together so that we can work together and lead together.”
As the leading advocacy organization for American cities, NLC works to bring resources and solutions to cities both large and small, rural and urban.
In his speech during the Summit, Buscaino spoke of walking in the footsteps of former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley.
“Forty-five years ago as my mother was bringing me home from the hospital after giving birth, Los Angles’ legendary Mary Tom Bradley was taking the helm as president of the National League of Cities,” Buscaino said. “Before he was mayor, Tom Bradley was a councilmember in Los Angeles and before he was a councilmember, he was an LAPD police officer.”
“So to be assuming the presidency of NLC today and following the footsteps of a legendary LA figure is the honor of my lifetime,” said Buscaino.
