North Carolina State University (NCSU) students will spend this week on Solar Spring Break, installing no-cost rooftop solar for a South Los Angeles Habitat for Humanity homeowner through GRID Alternatives’ Solar Spring Break program.

The NCSU participants, who are mostly engineers, get to spend a week learning about urban planning, installing solar panels, touring communities harmed by pollution, and asking questions about the State of California’s investments in clean energy.

Students will stay five nights in South Los Angeles, tour Homeboy Industries to learn about justice movements, and explore the Watts Towers and other local landmarks. Their work installing solar will unlock more than $30,000 for the community.

Solar Spring Break, a national alternative break program which creates opportunities for students to make a difference in low-income communities, was launched in 2014 and is sponsored by Wells Fargo.
