In following requests by Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles County officials of a new public health order to stay home and increase social distancing, Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools, has announced that she has extended her recommendation to close all schools to students, with pupils tentatively scheduled (at press time) to return on May 5 to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The Palmdale School District Board of Trustees has instructed the Superintendent Raul Maldonado to announce that the school district believes it is best to extend student dismissal until May 5. All classified and management staff who were calendared to work next week will report as expected. Certificated staff and all other employees who were calendared to report on March 30 reported on that due date.

The Public Health guidelines provide for the continuation of the  district’s food service program. All children 18 years and under can receive free take-home breakfast and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at Manzanita, Mesquite, Quail Valley, Summerwind, Tamarisk, and Yucca schools, and also at McAdam Park.

The Palmdale School District website has a current link to resources for students and families to use at home. District officials have worked for the past two weeks to develop a plan that will allow all students to continue their studies. The plan is inclusive of necessary professional learning for all staff delivering instruction online, device rollouts, as well as necessary creation of standards-based packets for students without access to WiFi or devices.
