Southern California Edison and its employees have donated nearly $300,000 to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to help fight hunger during the coronavirus crisis.
“At Edison, we’re committed to giving back to the communities we serve and live in, especially in these unprecedented times,” said Caroline Choi, senior vice president of corporate affairs at Edison International and SCE. “The company and our employees are proud to support the efforts of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to help vulnerable communities — particularly those who have been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic — have access to food and other critical services.”
A company fundraising campaign raised more than $199,000 from employees, including company matching funds. Edison International also awarded a grant of $100,000.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank will use the funds to provide food to children and their families who need assistance during school closures, senior citizens impacted by the crisis, and others in need of help.
“Given the current situations, this contribution from Edison International will immediately fund emergency distributions and increase the amount of food provided to the community,” said Food Bank President and CEO Michael Flood. “We are sincerely grateful for Edison International and Southern California Edison’s support at this critical time.”
During normal times, an estimated one in five people struggles with food insecurity in Los Angeles County, including one in four children. There are more food-insecure individuals in LA County than any other county nationwide, according to the Food Bank.
In response to the pandemic, the organization has increased food distribution by more than 70 percent, reaching more than 200,000 people every week.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, established in 1973, distributes food directly to families, seniors and children and also through a network of 600 partner agencies. Find out more at LAFoodBank.org.
