Dr. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter LA; Pastor William D. Smart Jr., president/CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) of So. Cal; and Ron Herrera, president of the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO will be included along with a collection of local messengers during a virtual “Get Out The Vote Extravaganza” set for 5 p.m. tonight, Oct. 29, on facebook live @SCLCSoCal.

The event is designed to encourage communities to make plans and get out to vote and will feature entertainment as well as important information on voter protection and ballot tracking. It is sponsored by the October Election Month Coalition, a collaboration of community and interfaith organizations, labor unions and activists working together to minimize voter suppression and maximize early voter turnout.

“You can vote right now,” Smart, a coalition co-chair, said on the group’s site.  “We want to make sure you understand that.”

Smart stresses that voters do not have to worry about whether the U.S. Postal Service will process their ballots in time. The You Tube video features him standing next to one of the 350 vote boxes strewn about L.A. County.

“Representing Martin Luther King’s organization, many people say to me ‘my vote doesn’t count.’ Well, your voice does count,” Smart said. “Don’t renege on your responsibility as an American by not voting. You must do whatever it takes. Your vote is that important.”
