The Dymally Institute will host the Dymally International Jazz & Arts Festival on Saturday, April 30 gates open at 1 p.m. at the Dignity Health Sports Park Tennis Stadium, 18400 S. Avalon Blvd. on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), in Carson.
In partnership with Rainbow Promotions, the festival features iconic artists including David Sanborn, the Original Wailers, Poncho Sanchez, Avery Sunshine, Kirk Whalum with special guest Kevin Whalum, and more.
The festival, is designed to celebrate the healing power of music as jazz lovers convene for an afternoon of culture where music and art take center stage.
“We are thrilled to share our internationalist mission through cultural art at a time when the world desperately needs solidarity,” said Dr. Anthony Asadullah Samad, executive director of the Dymally Institute. “The past two years have been physically and emotionally devastating. The city deserves the joy that comes from melodies that speak to the soul. We are using music and art to promote higher education thought.”
A signature event of the Dymally Institute, the festival supports the organization’s mission to develop the next generation of political and community leaders who will advocate for systematic change to combat inequality. With the goal of using music, arts and culture for creating pathways to success for African-American families across the nation, the Institute is located at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH)—preparing students to examine political and economic structures that impact the Black community and other marginalized groups.
“After the trauma that our local communities have endured, the festival symbolizes hope as we support our bright and gifted students,” said Dr. Thomas A. Parham, president of CSUDH. “Our university takes tremendous pride in our alliance with the Dymally Institute and their critical work to ensure that the gems promised by the constitution are afforded to all.”
Featuring an art pavilion, a second stage of amazing performers, retail vendors, community fair with health and wellness resources along with support for small businesses, the festival offers general admission along with VIP seating. With full respect for science, the organizers have installed hand sanitizing stations throughout the venue and have implemented other measures to keep the audience safe.
