A relentless “game-changer’
Faye Washington, who for 23 years worked to empower women and eliminate racism, has announced her retirement as president and CEO of the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles.
During her professional career, Washington was recognized as a “game-changer” in the non-profit space. With the YWCA, her tireless efforts helped to give a “voice to the voiceless” as well as impacting countless lives in the local African-American community. Washington orchestrated multi-million-dollar facilities that to this day yield positive results for Greater Los Angeles.
Among these developments is the state-of-the art Union Pacific Empowerment Center in East Los Angeles. She also helped to spearhead the Gloria Molina Community Empowerment Center in Walnut Park. Also, Washington was instrumental in the funding and construction of the Los Angeles Job Corps Urban Campus in Downtown LA.
Under Washington’s tenure with the YWCA, philanthropist McKinzie Scott donated $20 million. With those funds in hand, Washington oversaw the renovation of the YWCA-GLA Studio Club which now serves as a women’s residential facility to serve the needs of 125 homeless women.
