40 Years of Praise

Church is a major staple within the Black community. Many people within the Black community embark upon a journey to establish their own religious institutions– this was especially true for Mamie Leonard.

In August 1983, the Mamie Leonard Shut-In Ministries was established due to Mamie Leonard’s strong beliefs as an evangelist, belief in salvation, deliverance, healing, and the presence of the Holy Ghost. On Sept. 16, the Mamie Leonard Shut-In Ministries, 6741 West Blvd. in Inglewood, held a 40 Years of Glory Celebration at Carson Community Center.

The Mamie Leonard Shut-In Ministries was established 40 years ago after a devout evangelist woman began a now inter-denominational ministry. Since that time, many shut-in revivals have taken place. Attendees from Inglewood, San Diego and Indiana made their way to Carson for the celebration. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with a red carpet and a large poster depicting distinguished sponsors of the church. The event offered a Celebration of Praise and a master of ceremonies. The master of ceremonies was presented by Pastor Mark E. Leonard. Musical selections included familiar gospel classics such as “More than Anything” by Anita Wilson.

Tables were decorated with charming white and violet sheer fabric, a direct reference to the deep spirituality embedded in the church. Reflections, commendations, lunch, and appreciation was aplenty. Esteemed members of the community included Pastor Ron Hill from Love and Unity Church of God in Christ in Compton and Assemblymember Tina McKinnor (61st District).

Warmth, love, and unity was present throughout the entirety of the establishment. Long-time Mamie Leonard Ministry attendee, Barbara Lesure stated, “The 40 Years of Glory Celebration rendered a stellar, spirit-filled tribute and celebration honoring the life and labor of the Late Mamie Sconiers Leonard and her Shut-in Ministry! Amazingly, today’s celebration mirrored the same godly presence and power that Evangelist Leonard experienced before her passing. In its 3-hour duration, praise and worship; Testimonies of salvation; and a holy dance went forth. The house rocked! All left anxious to see what Christ will do for the Shut-in in the coming years".
