On Oct. 6, an estimated 500 people attended the CHIRP LA Free Housing Resource Fair in the City of Compton. CHIRP LA partnered with the City of Compton and District 2 Councilman Andre Spicer in order to provide free resources for people living with HIV/AIDS and people at risk of homelessness in Compton. The aim of the event was to unite people from all walks of life and cross-sections of the community for vital resources and to assist with housing insecurity, and health-related concerns.
"CHIRP LA is an incredible force of compassion and change, and the City of Compton is incredibly honored to partner with them to offer these resources to our community," Spicer said. "The Housing Resource Fair is a testament to our commitment to support all of our community members, especially those in need of additional resources.”
A wide range of resources were available from up to 68 providers, such as job opportunities, mental health services, HOPWA housing specialties, and legal assistance. Thomas & Safran held open interviews for positions such as maintenance technicians and assistant property managers. The resource fair also offered free HIV testing to all attendees.
"We are dedicated to improving the well-being of individuals in Los Angeles County," said Arely Vasquez, program director, from CHIRP LA. "Offering housing, supportive services, and employment resources in Compton, a central hub of Los Angeles, allows us to connect with those who can benefit the most from our services. In cases where individuals and families face challenges in locating resources, we proactively deliver these resources directly to them."
Attendees shared personal testimonies while highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive solutions and resources. This event showcased the importance of intersecting challenges faced by those affected by housing instability and those affected by HIV/AIDS. It is a powerful reminder of community members' resilience and the city's determination to improve access to lifesaving resources.
