At Pitchess Detention Center

At least four sheriff's deputies were injured this week, two critically, in an apparent explosion and fire on a training range at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.

Firefighters went to the facility in the 29300 block of The Old Road on a report of “an outdoor fire,'' about 9:40 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire was burning in a trailer–possibly a mobile firing range–on the grounds of the facility, and firefighters were continuing their efforts to douse the flames more than an hour afterward, the fire department reported.

Crews on the scene reported that four patients were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, two with critical injuries and two with minor injuries.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department described what happened as a “training incident.''

“At approximately 9:30 a.m., there was a fire at a training facility located at the Pitchess Detention Center,'' the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. “Several deputies were transported to a local area hospital for injuries.''

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
