Premiers on Nov. 9
The City of Palmdale will host the premiere of The Great Food Rescue, a documentary that follows the journey of edible food recovery from the source to service providers who distribute the food to families facing food insecurity.
The Great Food Rescue showcases successful food recovery programs in Palmdale and the community organizations working to feed those in need. Attendees will learn about the solid waste changes required by Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383). City staff and food recovery experts will be on hand to answer questions for businesses interested in becoming a part of Palmdale’s food rescue efforts.
The premier will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Palmdale Playhouse, 38334 10th St. East. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the mayor of Palmdale, council members, and special guests walking the green carpet. Local commercial edible food generators are encouraged to attend. It is open to the public, but seating is limited. An online RSVP is required via https://forms.office.com/g/xUSrRQjwqS by Nov. 6.
The California State Legislature passed SB 1383, which requires cities and counties to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% and rescue for people to eat at least 20% of currently disposed surplus food by 2025. The goal of SB 1383 is to reduce organic materials going to landfills, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and slow climate change.
SB 1383 additionally requires jurisdictions to implement an edible food recovery program that will feed hungry people, strengthen relationships between commercial edible food generators and food recovery organizations, and build more resilient Communities.
