City of Compton Hosts Compton’s Youth Track Champions for a Celebratory Banquet

On Saturday, Nov. 4, from 11:30 A.M to 12:30 P.M, City of Compton Mayor Emma Sharif will be hosting a memorable Champion Track Banquet to celebrate the youth who have achieved remarkable success in the 2023 Junior Olympics and AAU National Championships at Dollarhide Community Center (301 N Tamarind Ave).

Youth participants from both the Compton Electric Speed Track Team and the Imani Speed City Compton Club will be the stars of the event. Mayor Sharif will personally present them with certificates from the City of Compton, celebrating their dedication, commitment, and outstanding performance at the Junior Olympics. Notably, four of these remarkable young athletes not only secured top placements but also broke two records at the 2023 USATF Junior Olympics in the 4x100 Relay and 4x400 Relay.

The Champion Track Banquet will include two distinguished guest speakers, Lionel Larry and Bobby Jones. Lionel Larry, an American sprinter who specializes in the 400 meters attended Dominguez High School in Compton. He previously ran for the University of Southern California and won a gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany, as a member of the preliminary heat of the 4 x 400-meter relay. Bobby Jones last played for the Scaligera Basket, an Italian professional basketball club. He played basketball for three years at Dominguez High School. He is notable for having played for an NBA-record five different teams in a single season.
