On Wednesday, Nov. 15, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell will join St. John’s Community Health Special Needs Network Center, and multiple County departments and community members, from 9 a.m.to noon for the official grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Jacqueline Avant Children & Family Center (The Center), 1741 E. 120th St., in Watts.

The event will feature guest speakers along with a community resource fair consisting of free giveaways, fun children’s activities, vendor booths, live entertainment, health screenings, and guest performances.

The schedule will include an ongoing community festival and resource fair. The center is named in honor of Avant, a longtime philanthropist and supporter of children and families in the South Los Angeles area. It is designed to serve as a national model for programs that address the complex needs of at-risk children struggling with trauma, and behavioral and mental health challenges.

Guest speakers will include Mitchell; Jim Mangia, president and CEO of St. John's Community Health, and Areva Martin, founder and president of Special Needs Network.
