Jan. 13 in South LA
This year’s Community Day will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1430 W. Manchester Ave. in South Los Angeles. Admission is free.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a prayer breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Activities include a food and clothing giveaway, a job fair, wellness fair, entertainment, financial resources as well as youth empowerment services.
Bishop Edward Turner founded his church, Power of Love Fellowship, and soon after realized that there were too many people needing help, such as food and clothing and he wanted to do something. For 38 years, he has opened his church and his heart each January to his neighbors and other community members in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Thousands of people are expected to take part in this day of empowerment.
Business and local organizations are welcome to get involved. Community Day is open to anyone who wants to help empower the community and its members. During each Community Day, resources are offered from throughout LA County.
Individuals who are interested in assisting in this mission are welcome to help in any way possible. Health organizations, corporations, performers, community partners – any group that wants to be involved are welcome.
Community Day was first established in 1996 by Bishop Turner to support and promote Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy by providing help, hope and succor for the less fortunate.
This idea first simmered when he and his wife Carolyn Turner took seven homeless men to breakfast one Sunday morning. “We told them we’d feed them again the next Sunday,” he said. “Seventy showed up, and the next Sunday it was more. Pretty soon, the McDonald’s bill grew to $1,300 and my advisors at the church said we’d have to do something.” That something has become Community Day.
