If you’re looking for a fun way to spend your time during the first weekend of June look no further. The Debbie Allen Dance Academy (DADA) is partnering with Councilwoman Heather Hutt and is hosting the 2nd annual community block party on June 2. The block party will begin on Washington Blvd. from Western Ave. to Gramercy Place. The block party will begin at noon and conclude at 7 p.m. The block party will take place at 1850 South Manhattan Place in Los Angeles. The block party is free and open to the public. Activities at the block party include free rides, games, dance classes, arts & crafts, and food trucks.
The Debbie Allen Dance Academy is a non-profit organization that offers comprehensive dance classes to students ages four and up. The academy has a specific focus on Black and Latino communities and offers dance, theater, and performance to enrich the lives of all students who attend. The founding principles of DADA include: arts education defines discipline, creativity, and self-confidence. Debbie Allen is an internationally renowned choreographer, dancer, author, director, and actor. Debbie Allen has earned six Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, five NAACP Image Awards, a Drama Desk, an Astaire Award, and an Oliver Award. Additionally, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The academy offers a variety of classes including early bird classes for 3-7 year olds, pre-academy, academy, red bird, and sons of dada courses for 8-18 year olds, and conservatory and ensemble courses for 12-18 year olds, a musical theater program, open classes, and outreach. Outreach includes the Colibri Arts, Dance Free Day, J.O.Y., lecture demonstrations, a scholarship program, and subsidized school performances. The academy just recently had a RISE Showcase and is set to have an Early Bird & Spring Recital on June 15.
