If you’re looking for a fun way to reign in the summer and celebrate Juneteenth, you may not have to look much further! Friends of Allensworth and CA State Parks are co-hosting a Juneteenth Festival on June 8 at Colonel Allensworth Historic Park. The festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park is located at 4011 Grant Dr., in Allensworth. Col. Allen Allensworth was a slave who escaped during the Civil War and became a chaplain for the U.S. Army. Retired Colonel Allensworth created a township where retired Buffalo Soldiers and other African Americans could own property, learn, thrive and live the “American Dream.”.

Attendees are welcome to learn about Black history, enjoy tours, entertainment, kid’s activities, and horse and buggy rides through the historic town. Park staff will be available to give free tours of restored building and, historic house museums. Expect craft, food vendors and entertainment celebrating freedom, resilience and wellness.

Vehicle fees start at $10 per car and $50 and $75 for buses. Booking on Amtrak San Joaquins are available only for events. The Friends of Allensworth has a total of four events each year to help preserve the town’s history. Other events include a Black History Month in February, a May festival, and a Founder’s Day event in October. All events take place on the second Saturday of the month.
